The monthly deficit in August was $345 billion. Revenues: $344 billion Spending: $689 billion Total deficit for 2025 = $1.973 trillion with one month to go in the fiscal year. That's $76 billion higher than the same point in 2024 ($1.897 trillion).

The latest data confirms that tariff revenue has become a significant source of U.S. budgetary receipts. The recent monthly collection of $29.5 billion (compared to a previous $7 billion) brings the year-to-date total to $165 billion, a gain of $95 billion relative to last year.

$345 billion deficit last month. In the George W Bush administration that was an entire *year* of deficit. In the Carter administration it was the entire federal budget.
